On the Friday before the bull sale, Snyder Livestock holds an informative seminar for all livestock producers. The seminar begins at 4:00 PM at the Casino West Convention Center. The seminar this year features presentations by Dr. Bob BonDurant, Dr. Patrick Doyle and Ron Torrell. Dr. Bob BonDurant comes from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at UC Davis and will be discussing semen testing. Dr. Patrick Doyl from CSU, Chico, will talk about residual feed intake and how it is the current measure of feed efficiency. Ron Torrell's talk is entitled "Keeping Sire Selection in Perspective." Ron is the Nevada Extension Beef Specialist. Please join us on Friday, March 7 for this valuable experience. This year we have 275 consigned bulls for the test and we plan to sell 130 of the bulls in the sale. The bulls are evaluated in seven areas. Individual scores for fertulity, weight gain on the test, conformation, muscle structure, ultrasound data, feed efficiency, and weaning performance contribute to the total ranking of the bulls with the highest ranked bull selling first. The feed efficiency test data is included in the test for the first time this year. Equipment produced by GrowSafe Systems provides individualized feed and water consumption. This data is then utilized to calculate feed efficiency for each bull. Snyder Livestock is the first bull test in the Western united States to incorporate feed efficiency into the testing data. |
